How Can I Prepare My Roof for a Storm?

Storms are a very devastating phenomenon of nature, and they tend to damage whatever stands in their way. The environment around us and our houses are at the most risk of damage from storms. No matter how much you have invested in getting a strong roof that was marketed for withstanding the force of a storm, you must make some preparations to avoid storm damage.

This becomes crucial for those who reside in high-risk storm areas. With the right strategy and method, it is possible for you to increase the durability of your home. Below are the nine best roof preparation tips to keep your roof safe.

1. Replace Missing Shingles

Shingles are the first line of defense between your roof and storm, so you must take better care of them. They protect everything below them. Shingles can go missing for a variety of different reasons, but we are not here to discuss those reasons.

If you find a missing shingle and don't replace it on time, it can do severe damage. First, the high winds of a storm can tear the nearby shingles, and the repair will be very costly. Replace any missing shingles and keep them intact, so moisture doesn't reach the below surfaces.

2. Inspect by yourself

After every storm, check the roof by yourself if you have easy access to assess the damage done by the storm. If the damage is too much, immediately calling your roof contractor and get it repaired before the next storm.

3. Fix any existing Leaks

Upon inspection, you can also find damage done to the roof by water, leakage, and moisture. If the damage is repairable, contact a roofing contractor and get it repaired.

Call a roof inspection team to assess the damage professionally and get suggestions about possible repairs. Leaks can damage the wood and damage the foundation of the home if you don't deal with them.

4. Clean Gutters

Gutters take all the water off your roof, but they can be clogged due to debris that collects over time. During the inspection, clean gutters from leaves and other debris to avoid overflowing.

5. Cut trees and hanging branches

Nature is loveable, but a nearby tree can fall on your roof during a heavy storm and completely break the roof. For homeowners from high-risk areas, cut down all nearby trees before the next storm season.

6. Remove Outside Objects

Storms come with heavy winds, and they are powerful enough to blow away some common house items such as chairs. Move all the outside items into the house before the storm, or they can crash into the house during the storm and damage it.

7. Close All Doors and Windows

To stay safe from a heavy storm, you must balance out the inside and the outside pressure. Reinforce all windows and doors of your house with wood and choose strong glass for windows instead of a fragile one.

8. Schedule an Evaluation

If you have a doubt that your roof is already damaged, just call a professional for inspection and evaluation. They will tell you to get your roof repaired as soon as possible and which repairs can wait.

9. Regular Maintenance

With regular maintenance, you will have an idea about which part of the roof will go down first. Frequent maintenance will cost you a bit extra, but they are worth it.
